THE
'VATIGUERRO PROPHECY' (mid 1300s) - Attributed
to John (Jean) of Vatiguerro and given a vague date of “c. 13
century”, very little is known of this author, except his name is
not 'John of Vatiguerro'. He has also been known as Jean de
Vatiguerro, Jean Prêcheguerre, Jean Vatigero or Vatigera. He is also
known by the Latin, Joannes de Vatiguerro. Since Vatiguerro /
Prêcheguerre means to 'see the wars' or 'foresee the wars', it is
obviously a pen-name.
The
original author of the text was Johannes de Bassigniaco, and the
prophecy dates to c. 1345-1382. He was also called 'John Bassigny'
by Jean de Bois. (Source: Jennifer Britnell
and Derek Stubbs, The Mirabilis Liber:
Its Compilation and Influence,
Journal of the Warburg and
Courtauld Institutes Vol.
49 (1986), pp. 136-137)
Hence,
we have the true the author of the prophecy, John Bassigny, although
we know little else of its author other than he was French and came
from the Champagne region, and possibly a cleric due to his knowledge
and use of Latin. According to certain earlier surviving editions of
his text / prophecy predating the 'Liber Mirabilis', he declared he
studied Holy Scriptures, poets, and other learned authorities. He
traveled to the Holy Land, possibly as a pilgrim, or in some
diplomatic capacity, maybe both. He declares he talked to a Jew (who
was a relation of his in the village of Garde-Adhémar in 1341 on the
rights banks of the Rhone), also a Syrian in Bethsaida and a Chaldean
on Mount Tabor in 1342, obviously about prophecies. However, it is
apparent his own prophecy was first made in France. (Source: Robert
E. Lerner, The Feast of Saint Abraham: Medieval Millenarians and
the Jews, University of Pennsylvania Press, 2001 pp. 83-88)
His
prophecy circulated and a copy was discovered in an ancient
manuscript kept by a priest named Guillermus Bauge, or Guillaume
Bauge, who lived or was stationed in Tours in the parish of Nohan or
Rohan, depending on the text. Eventually it was
printed under the name 'John Vatiguerro' in the 'Liber Mirabilis', a
popular book of prophecies published in France c. 1520s. As time
progressed, 'John Vatiguerro' was credited with translating the whole
book instead of only providing one set of prophecies in it!
Apparently, little research has been carried out on the origins of
this book, and according to the Wikipedia, it is not to confused with
the 'Mirabilis Liber', a book that appeared about the same time, and
was translated in French and finally published in its entirety in
1831 by Edouard Bricon.
If
this is the case, it appears the 'Mirabilis Liber' apparently seems
to be an unofficial or spurious edition of the original 'Liber', and
unfortunately, is taken to be the official edition of the book.
Compounding the problem, if the information on Wikipedia is accurate,
it is practically impossible to find copies of the 'Liber Mirabilis',
while on the other hand the 'Mirabilis Liber' is found everywhere.
Which is the official text? Where can it be found? We can no longer
be sure.
Of
interest, Bassigny attempted to provide years when his predictions
would be fulfilled, so did future editors of the text, and although
the years proved wrong, and the history of the 'Liber' somewhat
dubious, he provided certain details not seen again until the
appearance of the 'Breton Stigmatist' Marie-Julie Jahenny
(1850-1941), who was approved by her local bishop in 1875 and whose
prophecies are coming true in our own times. Hence, I have removed
the dates he and later editors added and have included his prophecies
on this site.
::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
'The
Vatiguerro Prophecy' by John Bassigny: (…) the Catholic Church and
the entire world shall mourn the capture, despoliation and
devastation of the most illustrious and famous city, capital and
mistress of the Kingdom of all the French. (Invasion / Destruction of Paris?)
All the Church in all the World shall be persecuted in a lamentable
and grievous manner; it shall be stripped and deprived of all its
temporal possessions and there shall be nobody in all the Church who
does not feel fortunate at having escaped with his or her life.
For
all the churches shall be polluted and desecrated, and all public
worship shall cease because of fear and because of a most rabid and
uncontrolled madness. The nuns, quitting their convents, shall
flee here and there, demeaned and insulted The pastors of the
Church and the hierarchy, hunted and stripped of their dignities and
their positions, shall be cruelly manhandled; the flocks and subjects
shall take flight, and shall remain dispersed without pastor and
without leader.
The supreme leader of the Church shall change residence (I.e. leave Rome) and it shall be a cause of gladness to him, as well as to his brothers who shall be with him, if they can merely find a place of shelter where each can eat the bread of suffering with his own people in this vale of tears.
For
all the malice of men shall turn against the Catholic Church, and as
a result she shall be without an advocate for twenty-five months and
more, because, throughout the said space of time, there shall be
neither Pope nor Emperor in Rome, nor any Regent in France. (i.e. the paragraphs above implies this 'vacancy' in the Church will be due to wars and pillaging, a universal persecution of Christians, anarchy, etc.)
The world shall esteem only those who shall be driven by evil and vengeance. Alas! the suffering caused by all the tyrants, emperors and unfaithful princes shall be renewed by those who shall persecute the holy Church. Indeed, the mischief and profanity of the Huns and the cruel inhumanity of the Vandals shall be nothing in comparison to the new tribulations, calamities and sufferings that in a short while shall oppress the holy Church; for the altars of the holy Church shall be destroyed, the floors of the temples desecrated, the monasteries polluted and despoiled, because the hand and anger of God shall take their vengeance on the world on account of the multiplicity and continuity of sins.
All
the elements shall be debased, because it is necessary that the whole
nature of the age be changed; indeed, the earth, petrified with fear,
shall suffer frightening quakes in many places, and shall swallow up
the living; a number of towns, fortresses and strong castles shall
collapse and be flattened by earthquakes.
The production of the land shall diminish; now the plants shall lack moisture, now the seeds shall rot in the fields, and the shoots that come up shall not produce any fruits.
The sea shall rage and shall rise against the world, and it shall swallow many ships and their crews. The air shall be contaminated and corrupt because of the malice and the iniquity of men.
In the sky shall be seen numerous and most surprising signs: the sun shall be darkened, and it shall appear the color of blood to the eyes of many people. (The Two Days of Darkness before the Three Days of Darkness? See Marie-Julie Jahenny's prophecies here. )
On one occasion, for about four hours, two moons shall be seen at the same time; next to them shall appear many astonishing things worthy of awe. (Marie-Julie Jahenny also foretold a time of four hours of darkness as a warning before the chastisments strike.)
Stars shall collide with each other, and this shall be the sign for the destruction and massacre of nearly all mankind. (A warning before the Two / Three Days of Darkness?)
(Of interest - could this be it? Scientists have predicted a star collision that will be visible to the naked eye in c. 2022-2023 in the constellation Cygnus, also known as the Northern Cross. If it happens, this is the first time scientists will have been able to predict such an event. Therefore, this makes for a noteworthy star collision, click here for more details.)
The natural movement of the air shall be almost completely altered and perverted because of pestilential illnesses. Men, as well as animals, shall be struck by various infirmities and by sudden death: there shall be an unspeakable plague; there shall be an astonishing and cruel famine which shall be so great and of such an extent throughout the World and especially in the regions of the West, that since the beginning of world no one has ever heard of the like.
The pomp of the nobles shall disappear, even the sciences and arts shall perish, and for a short space of time the whole order of the clergy shall remain in humiliation. Lorraine shall be stripped and plunged into mourning, and Champagne shall in vain implore help from its neighbors; it shall not be given any, but it shall be turned upside down, pillaged, and shall remain grievously in devastation. It shall be Ireland, Scotland and England that shall invade and devastate it. But (...) shortly before or after, these provinces shall be rescued by a young captive, who shall regain the crown of the lily and shall spread his dominion over the whole World. (i.e the Great Monarch) Once fully established, he shall destroy the sons of Brutus and their isle [Britain?]*, such that there shall no longer be any question of it and that they shall stay forever annihilated. (The 'Son of Brutus' - this is one element of the prophecy that is questionable. See the footnote below.)
So
much for the tribulations that must take place before the restoration
of Christendom. But after the whole World shall have been prey to the
tribulations and to such great and numerous miseries, in order that
the creatures of God may not remain entirely without hope there shall
be elected by the Will of God a Pope from among those that shall have
escaped the persecutions of the Church, and he shall be a very holy
man, gifted with every perfection and he shall be crowned by the holy
angels and placed on the holy throne by his brothers who, with him,
shall have survived both exile and the persecutions of the Church.
(i.e the Angelic Pontiff) This Pope shall reform the whole World by his holiness, and shall
bring back the ancient manner of living, consistent with the
disciples of Christ, to all the clergy, and all shall respect him
because of his virtues; he shall preach barefoot and shall not fear
the power of princes. Also he shall bring back many to the holy fold
through their repenting of their mistakes and of their criminal life.
He shall convert nearly all the infidels, but mainly the Jews.
This Pope shall have with him an Emperor, a very virtuous man, who shall be of the remnants of the most holy blood of the kings of the French. (I.e. the Great Monarch) This prince shall be an aid to him and shall obey him in all things with a view to reforming the World, and under this Pope and this Emperor the World shall be reformed, because the anger of God shall subside. There shall not be more than one law, one faith, one baptism, one way of life. (I.e. heresies will cease. The Christian churches unified) All men shall have the same sentiments and shall love one another, and peace shall last for many years.
But
after the age shall have been renewed, there shall appear many signs
in the heavens again and the malice of men shall reawaken. They
shall return to their old iniquities and to their detestable
wickedness, and their crimes shall be worse than the first; that is
why God shall bring about and shall advance the end of the world.
I have spoken: it is finished.
You will find this ancient prophecy about the very noble Kingdom of France, in the hands of a certain priest named Guillaume Baugé, in the Diocese of Touraine and the parish of Nohan (Rohan)?. ***

*
Note: the 'destroy the sons of Brutus' was a term used by Machiavelli
(1469-1527 AD) in his 'Discourses on Livy' (c. 1517) – 'slay the
Sons of Brutus'. In making a point on why enemies of a newly founded
regime need to be eliminated, Machiavelli recounted Livy's tale of
Brutus and his sons. "As the history shows," he observed,
the sons "were induced to conspire with other young Romans
against the fatherland because of nothing other than that they could
not take advantage extraordinarily under the consuls (of the Roman
Republic) as under the king, so that the freedom of that people
(under the Republic) appeared to have become their servitude."
In all, the sons of Brutus set out to revolt against and subvert
republican institutions because they couldn't turn these institutions
to their personal advantage as under the old regime.
The
fact this is included in the 'Liber' shows this could be an addition
by an unknown author to the 'Mirabilis Liber' of the 1500s, or, that
this term was used earlier than Machiavelli if it was indeed used by
John Bassigny in the mid 1300s. He did say he had studied classical
sources, and may have been familiar with the histories of Livy.
In
this instance, the term 'slay the sons of Brutus' is used in a
slightly different application and may simply mean dissenters and
invaders: the prophecy above states there 'will be no rule in
France, no Emperor, or Pope', for a short time, therefore it is the
monarchical regime that will be thrown out first—replaced by
anarchy and pillaging. This points to a major war / revolt, which is
also foretold in other accepted and approved prophecies. However,
this is a new element, i.e. that the Irish, Scottish and English are
predicted to invade France as well, and then, the Great King of
France will then restore the throne, he will destroy those who dared
to invade his country and eliminate all those who still threaten the
restoration of the throne as this will prove no advantage to them.
However,
according to prophecies by other sources / mystics, England will be 'conquered' by the king, but not destroyed, have
its own civil war and will seek help from the French King! This is
one instance the prophecy does not add up with the others as Ireland
/ Britain will be converted and will not be utterly destroyed.
Possibly, Bassigny added actual historical elements of his time as
'prophecy currently under fulfillment' to make the rest of the text
sound more 'authentic' as a prophecy, a tactic used by a number of
medieval commentators on prophecies. Since the earliest version of
his prophecy dates from the mid 1300s, this coincides with just about
the start of the One Hundred Years War between the English and
French, therefore this one prophecy regarding the Irish / Scottish
and English invading France 'in the future' is suspect.

Note I have attempt to find out additional information on the phrase,
“You will find this ancient prophecy about the very noble Kingdom
of France, in the hands of a certain priest named Guillaume Baugé,
in the Diocese of Touraine and the parish of Nohan (or Rohan).”
I
have discovered the name 'Guillaume Bauge' in the records dating 1474
regarding a church called 'Chapelle Saint-Michel de la Grange' in the
'Archives Ecclésiastiques Antérieurs á 1790' (Ecclesiastical
archives before 1790) published by the Conseil Général
d'Indre-at-Loire. Tours.
Quote:
“Rent of a house at the door of Lehpitau, near the Rue des
Amandiers, by Archambault de Saint-Amand, chaplain. - Sharing of the
home made, in 1474, by René Chouain and JeanRegnard, masters of
masonry and carpentry work for the King, in Touraine, between
Guillaume deBauge, Jean de Banneuil and others, heirs of
ÉtienneHersant.”
It
appears there was a 'Guillaume Bauge' in Touraine in 1474, before the
'Mirabilis Liber' was published.
There
is a place called
Nohant-Vic near Touraine, and, there was a
village in Touraine in the 1600s called Nohan, which is now called
Nouans-les-Fontaines.
But,
if Rohan was meant, in Brittany where there is an aristocratic House
of Rohan. a member of which was governor of Touraine just around the
time the 'Mirabilis Liber' was published: John of Rohan-Guéméné
(c. 1475-1524), Lord of Landal, Governor of Touraine. Hence, if
Guillaume Bauge was a priest, he could have been chaplain to this
individual, or worked for him.
Therefore,
it is interesting that this prophecy by Bassigny was also found
safeguarded near Brittany as it features certain prophecies like the
'four hours of darkness' not repeated again until Marie-Julie
Jahenny, also known as the 'Breton Stigmatist', approved by her local
bishop in 1875.
