(????) Fr. Constant Louis Marie Pel (1878-1966)

(!?) FR. CONSTANT LOUIS MARIE PEL (1878-1966)

STATUS – SUSPICIOUS ORIGIN of the PROPHECY – extreme caution needed here. NOTE: there is no official condemnation of him or his prophecy, however, there is no official approval either of him as a mystic, and, there is strong evidence he himself did not make the prophecy attributed to him but was simply commenting and making his own observations on prophecies from other apparitions, including ones not approved by the Church according to those who knew him. It could also have been added to further by the priest who wrote down the prophecy.

So  this vision is a tough call - I've had to put in the 'suspicious' category as well as the 'credible - read with discernment section' - Observations will be added after his biography and his alleged prophecy about what we can follow, and what seems the most suspicious elements we have to take with a grain of salt.  Unfortunately, as there is still much of a question where he got his prophecies, I have not put his details in the Timeline here.

Fr. Pel was born in 1878 in Lantenay, a small village in Ain to François Honoré Pel and Marie Emilie Pélisson. He entered the minor seminary at the required age, where he made great progress in the spiritual life under the direction of Fr. Crozier, known as the 'saint of Lyon', apparently, a mystical priest who suffered an invisible stigmata. Fr. Pel would later inherit, among other things, his chalice, with whom he celebrated Holy Mass all his life. He was ordained a priest on June 1, 1901 in Brou (Bourg) by H.E. Mgr Luçon, bishop of Belley. Graduated in Letters from the Faculty of Lyon in 1902, became professor at the Petit Séminaire de Meximieux from 1903 to 1907, then at the Lamartine Institution in Belley from 1907 to 1923. Around 1915 or1916, his bishop refused him exeat which would have allowed him to go and join his hermit friend, Bl. Charles de Foucauld who was the spiritual director of Marthe Robin. Bl. Faoucault was grateful for having met him, Fr. Pel's piety and spirituality was without question and inspired those whom he met. He was appointed auxiliary to the shrine of Blessed Pierre Chanel in Cuet in 1923, then seconded to the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem in 1924 to help found a Marian shrine near Abbou-Gosh. He was then incardinated in the Diocese of Troyes on November 9, 1926 and, shortly after, in the Diocese of Ajaccio where he exercised a parish ministry among others in Corte. He founded two works: the convent of Camaldolese nuns at La Seyne-sur-Mer (Var) and the Christ-Roi seminary in Corsica at Corte. After the war (WWII), he lived his retirement as an interdiocesan missionary, traveling between Seyne-sur-Mer, Avignon, Paris, Mulhouse and Assais (Deux-Sèvres).

Apparently, he knew St. Padre Pio, it is said St. Pio once told some pilgrims who came to see him: “Why do you come to see me since you have such a great saint in France?”

Cardinal Maurin of Lyon is reported to have said: “He is a Curé of Ars with more science.”

He was above all an ardent apostle of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, a great devotee of the Sorrowful and Immaculate Heart of Mary and had great love for the Blessed Sacrament. It is alleged he was blessed with nearly 3,500 Eucharistic miracles, but this could have been an exaggeration, and may refer to the times he spent in adoration before the Blessed Sacrament. Br. Bernard-Marie, who was one of his spiritual children, notes his admirers could exaggerate his mystical gifts due to their zeal for him. It is said Fr. Pel spent his nights standing with his forehead against the door of the tabernacle lost in ecstasy, conversing with God, it was believed he saw Him face to face. Fr. Pel took about two hours to celebrate his Mass, and spent overwhelming days in the confessional, in addition to his apostolate and the missions he preached throughout France. It is said Fr. Pel declared: “Jesus gave me His Heart!” There must be truth to this, as Br. Bernard Marie says Fr. R. Gâteau, parish priest of Assais, told him in 1973 that Fr. Pel had confided to him something which he felt, that was not to be told until after his death. Fr. Pel said to him: “(When) About fifteen years old [so in 1893], I was coming back from Father Crozier. I suddenly felt, even physically, that my heart was torn from my chest and that the Heart of Our Lord was put in my place. Since then, I can say that I have never been tempted to sin willfully against charity.” (Source: “Le père Pel un vrai mystique: Par ceux qui l'ont connu”, Br. Bernard-Marie, O.F.S.)

Fr. Pel died in Assais he on March 5, 1966 following a car accident which occurred on January 20 of that year. His funeral was celebrated in Assais on Tuesday March 8.

His Alleged Prophecy of the Chastisements and the Three Days of Darkness-Where we Have to be Careful

Although, all that knew him were convinced he had many spiritual and mystical gifts, and was a very pious priest, it appears Fr. Pel made no prophecy of his own, for he was noted by those who knew him for giving too much credence to apparitions that were not approved by the Church or had not received a formal investigation yet as such, and, this even caused him trouble. A priest named Fr. Prosper Monier, S.J., a fellow student of the young Fr. Pel in Belley, told Br. Barnard-Marie: “He tended to believe in all kinds of unrecognized visions and apparitions, which caused him difficulties with the ecclesiastical hierarchy.” (“Letter to B.-M. Of 28.2.72. Source: “Le père Pel un vrai mystique: Par ceux qui l'ont connu”, Br. Bernard-Marie, O.F.S.)

Br. Bernard-Marie also questioned Jacques Maritain regarding his memories of Fr. Pel, and Maritain replied: “I have no precise memory of my meetings with Father Pel [in Meudon], except the impression that he was a great fan of visions and revelations that I myself considered very doubtful..” (letter to B.-M. of 10.04.1972)

Br. Bernard-Marie notes that Fr. Pel admitted himself he was too fond of believing in not yet approved apparitions, Br. Bernard writes: “Pel himself was aware of his penchant for giving too much credit to the advice and messages of unrecognized mystics (practically all of them women).” Br. Barnard also noted when he spoke of the apparitions or their messages, he never did so in order to approve of or spread them.   However, he apparently wished to believe rather than dismiss them in case they might be real and show proof Heaven does not leave us alone as orphans, for Br. Barnard-Marie continues, “I heard him justify it this way: “Yes, apparitions are perfectly possible, particularly suitable, I would say necessary. Suppose that, for twenty centuries, the Virgin Mary has been up there in Heaven enjoying her glory and has never let the sound of her voice heard on earth, that she has never let a ray of her light appear, that she never showed to her children of the earth a single feeling of affection and interest, could we still believe that she is a Mother? The Blessed Virgin can and must make her own the words of Our Lady of Christ: “I will not leave you orphans: I will come to you!” (Jn 14:18). As the Mother that she is, the Blessed Virgin takes this word into account. So we shouldn't be surprised that she comes, but rather be surprised if she doesn't come. Well! Do not be afraid: she is coming, she has come and she will come again!”

However, since the prophecy he gave is dated to 1945, it could be Marie-Julie Jahenny (1850-1941) he was referring to, much of what he is alleged to have said lines up with many of her prophecies, and since she is not condemned and the investigations that were made of her proved to be supernatural, (from Heaven), not to mention some details sound like what was foretold during the Appritions of Tilly, I cannot dismiss everything he noted.

Therefore, I will give this post four question marks (????) to read this prophecy with extreme caution, and will note the few red flags to be careful of afterwards which might be suspect.

WHO WROTE THE ALLEGED PROPHECY:

From the information I have found from French sites online, his alleged prophecy was written by one of his spiritual children named Fr. Henri Salou who was one of his first resident seminarians at La Seyne-sur-Mer. He was the senior incardinated priest in the diocese. He was born in Itxassou in the Pyrénées Atlantiques. He had been ordained on January 20, 1952 in La Castille and had notably been parish priest of Salernes and Sillans in 1963, then chaplain of the hospital and school of Sainte-Marthe de Draguignan in 1984.

There is a conflicting information on how Fr. Salou published this prophecy: some sites say in a book, others say it was taken from Fr. Salou's personal notes, (I personally have not found a title of a book written by him, or a printed source stating where this was actually first published), but online sites do agree this prophecy came out sometime in 1983-1984, so he wrote it when chaplain of Sainte-Marthe de Draguignan. I can only guess he was concerned with the ramping up of the Cold War and believed it was time to write what Fr. Pel had told him.

Of interest, I discovered he retired in June 2013 and later passed away in May, 19, 2021 in Brest, Brittany. His funeral was celebrated on Friday May 21 at 10:30 a.m. in the basilica of Folgoët and his burial took place in the cemetery of Drennec, which is in Brittany. Considering he worked as a priest in the the south of France, to see he ended his life in Brittany is interesting – I cannot but help but wonder if he this was due to Fr. Pel's prophecy regarding Brittany and if Fr. Salou had felt the time had come to get prepared.

The Prophecy Itself (as told by Fr Salou)

Thus, in 1945, my good Father Pel declared to me on behalf of God:

'My son,' he said to me, 'know that with the sins of the world going crescendo in horror during this century, very great divine chastisements will descend on the world and no continent will be spared from the Wrath of God. France guilty of Apostasy and denying her vocation will be harshly punished. It will be divided as by a line going from Bordeaux to Lille. To the right of this line everything will be devastated and burned by the invasion of peoples from the East and also by the fall of large flaming meteorites falling in rain of fire on the whole earth and on these regions in particular. It will be general desolation. Revolutions, war, epidemics, plague and others, poisonous and chemical gases, violent earthquakes. The extinct volcanoes of France will reignite, destroying everything: Auvergne, Alps, Pyrenees and other places. While the left part of the line will be less affected (Vendée, Brittany, because of the Faith still rooted in these regions), but nevertheless it will be necessary to move far away from the coast, sometimes even up to 50 km, to escape their engulfment at the bottom of the seas, like Marseilles as well as the Côte d'Azur, which will be engulfed because of the sins committed and the scandals on the beaches of these regions in particular.

But I must tell you, my child, that the sectarians and the great enemies of God who will want to take refuge there, believing to escape this world cataclysm, will be put to death there by the demons themselves, whatever the places where they may hide, for the Wrath of the Lord is righteous and holy. Thick darkness, caused by the war, the gigantic fires and the fall of the pieces of burning stars which will fall during three days and three nights will make the sun disappear, and only the candles of Candlemas, blessed on this occasion, will be able to give light in the hands of believers, but the ungodly will not see this miraculous light because they have their souls in darkness. So my child, three quarters of humanity will be destroyed and in places in France, it will often be necessary to travel a hundred kilometers to find its like. They will come to eat human flesh to survive. Several nations will disappear from the world map. France will be very small, but it will partly survive until the end of time. For she will again become, thus purified, the Eldest Daughter of the renewed Church. For all the Cains and Judases of mankind will have disappeared in this Judgment of the Nations, but it is not yet of the End Times, which must take place later.

The Mediterranean Sea will disappear completely, the oceans will launch huge jets of burning vapor towards the sky and will sweep the continents in a terrible tidal wave, annihilating everything in its path, while new mountains will rise from the oceans and lands. and while the Alps and the Rhine valley will collapse to the north, invaded by the sea. Thus, the map of the present world will be totally changed. And the earth will have big jolts that will prevent it from spinning normally. The seasons will no longer exist for at least three years before the earth can give back grasses and vegetation. Great famine all over the world. Paris will be destroyed by the Revolution and burned by atomic fire from the Russians from Orléans and the region of Provins. While Marseille and the Côte d'Azur will crumble into the sea. More than 3 billion human beings will disappear in this world turmoil and Jesus said that there will be no more such great desolation, even at the end of the world, so great will be the punishment due to the sins of the world.

'We are beginning,' my child, he told me (1945), 'to enter the time of the Apocalypse seen by Saint John, the apostle so beloved of Jesus. Later, when you see that dreaded time is near, then go to Brittany to withdraw, but towards the center, far from the coasts which will crumble. For this worldwide scourge will begin on a cold winter night and an awful roar of divine thunder will be heard from all over the world, and this divine thunderclap will sound abnormal, filled with demonic cries, it will be the voice of sin that men terrified will hear that night.”

THE RED FLAGS ~and Some Advice

* Fr. Salou was born in January 23, 1922 and died in May 19, 2021, at the venerable age of 100 according to online obituaries. According to this text, Fr. Pel told him this prophecy in 1945, therefore, this was told to him circa the age of 23, obviously when he first became a resident seminarian at La Seyne-sur-Mer. We can see the prophecy was written circa 30 years after the time he first heard it. This I find is a red flag as why wait so long to tell this prophecy? Especially as there are supposed to be necessary details to know like, getting the candles blessed 'only' on Candlemas? I find this odd. Our Lord wanted important details to get out, which is why He gave so many details to Marie-Julie as far back as He did, and told her this is so people would be warned in time (it does take awhile for authentic prophecies to spread). And now, we get this detail much later?

Since Fr. Pel himself obviously did not make the prophecy himself that he related to Fr. Salou in 1945, but possibly relaying what he heard regarding multiple apparitions, we do not know if all the details came from condemned apparitions or not. Certain details could be true or not.

From approved or credible not-condemned prophecies, I personally have not heard anything about having to have the candles for the Three Days of Darkness blessed on Candlemas itself, (the feast of the Purification), even Marie-Julie Jahenny does not say this. What does come from authentic apparitions is that the candles must be blessed by a priest, and, be made of pure wax with no other man-made mixture in them (i.e. beeswax), or they will not light. They will also not light in the house of a blasphemer or the impious.  They will only light for those with faith.

Once upon a time Candlemas was the only time candles were blessed, and they had to have enough candles to last for the year, but now, they can be blessed any time of the year.

My personal advice, if you wish to have them blessed on Candlemas, yes, that is a good thing, especially as there are additional blessings giving on them for that day, the biggest difference between the ordinary blessing and the Candlemas blessing is that the candles done at Candlemas are good against storms,  but whether or not the blessing MUST be done on that day for the Three Days of Darkness is doubtful considering we do not know where Fr. Pel got that detail and if it is authentic.

Also, since it is only a once a year type event, and, not many Novus Ordo only parishes do the Candlemas blessing any more, I find it hard to believe that Heaven would make it so difficult to get something done which will be imperative for our survival during the Three Days. As at least one quarter of mankind will survive, so that amount of people should be able to prepare. Putting too many difficulties or requirements in the way would seem to suggest much less than the foretold amount would be able to be prepared and saved which is why I question that detail. Of course, do go ahead and have the blessing done on your candles that day if you would feel more confident and want to be on the safe side, (yes, I have done it if you are wondering, I am blessed to be living where I can get it done on the actual day in Latin in the Traditional Rite), but whether it MUST be done is what is the question as not many people are as fortunate to be able to live near a parish that does these things. So, I still question that detail. I personally would be much more concerned about trying to get the old Latin candle blessing on them, (which is also said at Candelmas by the way), and can be done anytime of the year and there is no time limitation.

  • Other odd details that don't add up: according to Fr. Pel, that the Three Days of darkness is simply catastrophic, cosmic events and the aftermath of war, when Marie-Julie Jahenny was told it won't be just the wars and the fire from the sky, but the Three Days will also be supernatural, not from naturally explainable causes alone. Marie-Julie was told the very colour of the sky will be so horrific and unnatural we will die from fear of that alone, not counting all the demons that will be let loose, which is why we must not look out or we will die. (Fr. Pel mixes this up.)

  • Also, the detail that 3 billions will perish, while also prophesying that 3 quarters of the world will perish. Yes, other prophecies mention the 3 quarters, but in today's numbers, we are already close to 8 billion people on earth, about 5 to 6 billion are going to perish then, so the number don't add up, it's going to be much worse. So, I have no idea where he got that detail.

* One thing that does sound like good advice, despite not knowing where he got this detail, we must stay away from the coasts, even the protected areas of Brittany, up to 50 km, as the tidal waves are going to be atrocious during the 3 Days. Coasts will be wiped away. This makes sense as many authentic prophecies note there will be massive tidal waves and earthquakes leading up to and during the 3 Days. I'd personally try and get away from the coasts!  Obviously, God is going to purify the coasts where so much sin and indecency occurs regarding impurity with immodest dress codes, skimpy bathing suits etc.

Other interesting observations of Fr. Pel:

STAY IN UNION WITH ROME

Brother Bernard-Marie O.F.S. also wrote:

For Father Pel, the essence of his mission was summed up in the three 'whitenesses' of Don Bosco: devotion to the Eucharist, union with the Immaculate Virgin and fidelity to the Holy See. Towards the end of his life, he was very concerned about the "great events", the social and ecclesial upheavals he felt were coming, but, in this storm which he foresaw, he knew how to keep the only worthwhile course, fidelity to the Seat of Peter. In one of his letters of January 1965, he declared it to me clearly: "At the present time, especially when so many things are discussed, upset by changes which are not always of God, we must look towards Rome where the true light comes from." (Source: Book “Le père Pel un vrai mystique: Par ceux qui l'ont connu”.)

So, of interest, similar to Marie-Julie Jahenny, Fr. Pel did not support Sedevacantism, despite the changes coming that obviously not all were going to come from God.
