Official Clarification by the Bishop of Haarlem-Amsterdam regarding the Lady of All Nations Depiction of the Lady of All Nations

After consultation with and in agreement with the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, I declare the following: Through devotion to Mary, Mother of all Nations, many believers express their desire and their pursuit of the universal brotherhood of the people, with the help and support of Mary's intercession. "Mary is our Mother, she is the mother of our peoples, she is the Mother of us all" (Francis, homily of 12/12/2019) and she invites us to participate in God's plan and His wish that we all be brothers and that we become more and more brothers (cf. Benedict XVI, Enc. Caritas in veritate, n. 42). Pope Francis writes in his Encyclical Fratelli tutti: “For many Christians, this way of brotherhood also has a Mother called Mary. She has received this universal motherhood under the cross (Jn 19:26) and her attention is not only on Jesus but also on “the rest of her children” (Revelation 12:17). With the power of the Risen Lord, she wants to bring forth a new world, where we are all brothers and sisters, where there is room for all who are discarded by our societies, where justice and peace shine ”(n. 278). In this sense, the use of the title Lady of All Nations for Mary is in itself permissible theologically. Prayer with Mary and through the intercession of Mary, Mother of our nations, serves for the growth of a world that is more united, in which all recognize themselves as brothers and sisters, all created in the image of God, our common Father. However, the recognition of this title should not be understood as an acknowledgment - not even implicitly - of the supernatural character of some phenomena, in the context of which that title appears to have arisen. In this sense, the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith emphasizes the validity of the negative judgment on the supernatural character of the supposed “apparitions and revelations” to Ms. Ida Peerdeman, a judgment approved by Saint Paul VI on 05/04/1974 and published on May 25, 1974.

This judgment implies that all are invited to cease any dissemination of the supposed appearances and revelations of the Lady of All Nations. Thus, the use of the pictures and the prayer cannot be taken in any way as an acknowledgment - not even implicit - of the supernatural nature of the events in question. As for the use of the mere title "Lady", "Our Lady" or "Mother of All Nations", the Congregation has generally not opposed its use, as long as it is clearly separated from the recognition of the supposed apparitions. When Mary is invoked under this title, pastors and believers must ensure that all forms of this devotion refrain from any reference - even implicit - to the supposed apparitions or revelations.
