(Image: current coat of arms of North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, believed to be the Birch Tree country spoken of in the prophecies.)

For centuries the Germans have had their own set of famous prophecies that were passed down orally from the later medieval ages until the first recorded versions appeared in the mid 1400s.

The reason they are called the 'Birch Tree' prophecies is that many all agree in one point – that Germany, France and Europe will be convulsed by wars and that a decisive battle will be fought to free Germany (and France) of the invaders.

Usually the battle is placed around Cologne, and, that they will be beaten back and escape to the 'Birch Tree country', or to the 'place of the Birch tree', which is believed to be Westphalia. Several of these prophecies also foretell that after this bloody battle, a King or New Holy Roman Emperor will bring an age of peace to mankind.

The Rhineland prophecies of Germany also feature similar details, even if the 'Birch Tree Country' is not mentioned, hence I am including them here as well.

There is a theory that the prophecies were accidentally called 'birch tree' instead of 'cherry tree' as some of the prophecies do mention cherry tree branches, and the German word for cherry 'kirch' sounds like the English word 'birch', but this could not be the case as the word for birch tree in German is 'birke', and birch trees 'berken' or 'Birkenbäumchen', and could not be mistaken for 'kirch'. German texts definitely say birch. So, nice try attempting to blame this on English translators!

Unfortunately, we do not know who made the very first prophecies, if they were made by a saint or mystic, or some individual gifted by God with the grace of the prophetic spirit, or simply recorded down. They have become so ingrained into the German 'prophetic tradition' so to speak, it appears they even influenced Ven. Bartholomew Holzhauser and Abbé Souffrant, not to mention other commentators on prophecies, and therefore they deserve consideration.

Germany continued to have 'Birch Tree prophets' and Rhineland seers past the 1400s – so, the tradition continued into the 1700s, (if we can assume they are legitimate.) For instance, 1701 seems to have been a rather prolific year for Birch Tree Prophecies! The most interesting is Johann Rembold 'Spielbahn' (1689-1793) whose biography and his prophecies are a little more detailed than the others, so I was obliged to give him his own page, (link will be provided).

Despite not having been made by approved mystics, they fact the various Birch Tree and Rhineland Prophecies agree on so many points is interesting, and, one of the earliest recorded prophecies was correct in one distinguishing detail regarding the Great Monarch – he would be lame of foot. The promised Great Monarch was named by latter French mystics Ven. Josepha de Bourg, the 'Ecstatic of Tours' and Marie Julie Jahenny: he is 'Prince Dieudonné' 'Henry V the 'Miracle Child', and we note he became lame after he suffered a riding accident.

Below is a list of the most creditable prophecies of the Birch Tree tradition and Rhineland prophets – please keep in mind they are not from Church approved mystics, However, if Ven. Holzhauser believed in the early Birch tree prophecies, then they may be read with discernment as I have not found any heresy in them or anything that disagrees with Church doctrine, so I have included them in the Timeline, marked (??) meaning to be read with discernment.

I have attempted to include them in chronological order below.

::::::::::::::::::::::::::

(***) Eberhard Windecke (1380- c. 1441) - The First recorded prophecies

The German merchant and chronicler Eberhard Windecke was the first to record a 'Birch Tree' prophecy. The scant information I find about this is he apparently recorded it in 1431, therefore it must be from “Kaiser Sigismunds Buch”, his biography of King Sigismund of Luxembourg (1368-1437), which dates from that time.

Unfortunately, I cannot find a full text for the 'Birch Tree' prophecy he wrote in that book as it does not seem to be available online other than in a few snapshots of the coloured illuminated artwork, however, I did find a commentary by Frances Courtney Kneupper on the destruction of Prague he foretold, which has also been foretold by other German prophets such as Alois Irlmaier.

Windecke wrote: “Woe to you, wretched city (Prague), you will suffer tribulation and deprivation.” He described a bloodbath, the city will undergo, “murder and the killing of men, and the horror will not stop but continue to pile up.” It will suffer civil war and death when “the dragon will slay untold multitudes of people with his sword: up to six or seven thousand: all will be fornicators, murderers, adulterers, robbers and unjust people, and then they will see the light before their eyes.” This seems to indicate that an invader will be used by God to strike down and punish the ungodly. Then, in a section called the “Letter of Brother Sigwald” Windecke wrote the prediction that: “Those who harden themselves against the laws of Christianity will be stricken by the Roman Empire and its supporters. They will be killed by the plague, starvation, and the grim swords of their enemies.” (Source for the quotes: Frances Courtney Kneupper, “The Empire at the End of Time: Identity and Reform in Late Medieval German Prophecy”, Oxford Un. Press, 2016. pp. 161-162.)

The Holy Roman Empire will eradicate by the sword those who dared destroy the Christian kingdom – an indication that infidels will be driven from the land by a Holy Roman Emperor and the Holy Roman Empire will be re-established.

Concerning the 'Birch Tree' prophecy, it is said Windecke is the first to write down the prophecy of a terrible bloody battle that will take place between “two men”, obviously some great leaders near the Birch Tree Country, that will last two days and two nights-but that is all the information that seem to be available, at least in English. In 1545, an anonymous chronicler in Lunen also wrote down a prophecy concerning a battle of this scale, but his original text does not seem to be available online.

The next best thing to do is to place here what Ven. Bartholomew Holzhauser (1613-1658) wrote, as he mentioned in his own prophecies the prediction of two leaders that will fight it out in the last horrible war before the Great Monarch comes, meaning he was influenced by Windecke's account, and perhaps the one written in Lunen. PLEASE NOTE – we don't know how much of this came from Windecke's original 'Birch Tree Prophecy' nor the Lunen account, such as the timing and the nature of the new weapons:

Ven. Holzhauser: “[After a world war] will come a new period, in which two mighty ones will face each other. The wrangle between these two will begin in the second half of the twentieth century. It will overthrow mountains and silt up rivers. A great change will come to pass, such as no mortal man will have expected; Heaven and Hell will confront each other in this struggle, old states will perish and light and darkness will be pitted against each other with swords, but it will be swords of a different fashion. With these swords it will be possible to cut up the skies and split the earth. A great lament will come over all mankind and only a small batch will survive the storm, the pestilence and the horror. And neither of the two adversaries will conquer nor be vanquished. Both mighty ones will lie on the ground, and a new mankind will come into existence. God possesses the key to everything. Blessed is he who will then be able to praise him, having obeyed all his commandments. And the great monarch of the world will create new laws for the new mankind and will cause a new age to begin, in which there will be only one flock and one shepherd, and peace will be of long, long duration, for the glory of God in heaven and on earth…”

Ven. Holzhauser's account could have been considered a 'Birch Tree prophecy', if only he had mentioned the 'Birch Tree Country'!  Regarding the two leaders fighting it out in the 2nd half of the 20th century, this was obviously his own personal interpretation however, he did get the timing of futuristic weapons correct - sounds like something on the order of lasers, etc which we did see in the 20th century.

The Timeline Prophecy of 1622

In 1622 a timeline of when the great war and bloodshed foretold in the 'Birch Tree Prophecies' was made, however, there is no information on who made this original timeline.

One version was printed in Theodore Beykirch's book 'Prophetstimmen mit Erklärungen ', (Prophet Voices with Explanations), in 1849.

"The month of June will bring the beginning of the problems but it will not be yet the real war."
"In the month of July, the general mobilization will start."
"In August, all the involved people will start to feel the effects."
"In September, there will happen the largest massacre that humankind has ever yet experienced"
"Between October and December, there will be miracles." (Anonymous 1622 prophecy recorded by Beykirch)

Another version of the 1622 Timeline was published in Wilhelm Schrattenholz's book printed in 1848 and reprinted in 1849 about the Birch Tree prophet named Rembold 'Spielbahn' – (although it is clear Spielbahn never made the timeline). This is from an unknown prophet that Schrattenholz simply added to the book:

"The month of May will really prepare you for war, but it isn't time yet.
The month of June is also an invitation to war, but then it isn't time either;
July will act cruelly that many will have to take leave of women and children.
In August you are at all ends when you hear the world of war.
September and October will bring a big bloodshed with them.
In November you will see miraculous things.
**At this time the child is 28 years old, whose mother, (or wet nurse) will be tomorrow. It will do great things. "

(** NOTE: unless Schrattenholz was attempting to forge a prophecy in 1848 when the book was printed by adding the last line, the last line near 'miraculous November' regarding a 'child' whose 'mother / wet nurse will be tomorrow' who will be 28 when the trouble starts is very interesting -- Henry V the 'Miracle Child' of France was 28 years old when the French Revolution of 1848 broke out in June / July. Henry V is the named Great Monarch according to three mystics, Marie-Julie Jahenny, Ven. Josepha of Bourg, and the 'Ecstatic of Tours'.

While the 1848 Revolution didn't develop into the huge war, the future war will and this Timeline could be a double prophecy (again, providing the last line isn't a forgery) – it is interesting the Church-approved mystic Marie-Julie Jahenny (1850-1941) says a future civil war in Paris will be the start of the chastisements – it will happen in June and July, but the great world war / invasions will come after. They will happen in the weeks and months apart in three different phases – so this would follow the 1622 Timeline.

Also she said the people will see great miracles the like of which they won't see again until Judgement Day – Henry V died in 1883, but she was told all the prophecies still referred to him, and that he would be 'returned to his subjects' as he was 'reserved for the great epochs', and, that France and the 'Lily' representing the king would 'resurrect'. If the last line printed by Schrattenholz is real, then the child will be brought back if 'his mother will be tomorrow' cryptically represents a miraculous future.)

:::::::::::::::::::::::::::
:::::::::::::::::::::::::::

NOTE: The next three prophecies all date from 1701, and two come from Werl, so it is apparent these next prophecies are a combination of oral and printed prophetic tradition which must be based on the 'Monk of Werl's' prophecy.

:::::::::::::::::::::::::::
::::::::::::::::::::::::::

A Birch Tree Prophecy, 1701. The original author is anonymous, it was published by Theodore Beykirch in his book, “Prophetstimmen”, (Prophet Voices), (1849).

Apparently, this came from local oral tradition:

"There will come a time when the world become very godless. The people will become self-reliant from the king, and there will be a general loss of respect for authority and those who are no longer true to their masters or to their relief will become the rulers. There will then be a general uproar, so that father will fight against son, and son will fight against father. (I.e. revolts, anti-monarchical revolutions.)

"There will come a time when one will no longer respect the beliefs of the church and the school. New books will be introduced. There will come a time when the Catholic religion will feel very crowded, and there will be an attempt to get rid of it. People will enjoy play and joyous occasions about this time, and be generally fascinated by entertainment. But then it will not take very long for a change to step in. There will be an incredible war... On one side stands Russia and the entire North. And on the other side is France and the whole South under one first. This knight will come from Midday, (i.e. Meridionalis, an old term to say south). He wears a white cloak with buttons that go down to his feet. He carries a Cross on his chest, and rides a donkey. He will be lame afoot. This knight is so together that no one tries to stop him. He is also a peacemaker. Great is his strength. His strictness will be great because he will get rid of all dance music and lavish clothing that people might wear.

"The chief of the Prussian Army will be stopped in a place that is designed to make horse bridles.

"The enemies who are strangers to Germany will be put to flight and they will not have time to take with them what will nourish them during their flight.

"The barbarian peoples of the northern bear (Russia) will come to conquer but their enemies will take courage and they will battle with the fury of despair. Then their power will be broken, its force will be annihilated and then some few people will be at pains to survive in order to carry home the news of their defeat.

"The prince who will deliver the great combat will go to a church at Bremen to hear the Mass. From Bremen he will ride. From there he will see with his telescope toward the region of the Birch tree to observe the foes. Thereafter they will go up to Holtum, an area near Werl... By Holtum there stands a Crucifix between two linden trees. Before these linden trees he will kneel down, and for a long time he will pray with arms outstretched. Thereafter he will lead his soldiers, who are dressed in white, to the meeting. He will then remain after a bloody battle. He will be the victor. On a stream that flows from West to East near Berdberg and Sondberg there will be the most murdering and killing. Woe, woe to Budberg and Söndern these days! After the fight, the warlike general will address you in the chapel at Schaffhausen an der Haar. '”

Anonymous Prophecy published in 1701

Here is another Birch Tree prophecy that was published by an Anonymous author who gave himself the lofty none de plume, 'Unknown Who Became Illuminated' in a book entitled “The Proceedings of the Heavenly Renewal” which was published with the permission of the Officials from Werl. (Abhandlung über die himmlische Erneuung, von einem Ungenannten, der durch Gesichte erleuchtet wurde. Mit Erlaubnis des Werl'schen Offizialates, Köln 1701).

Again, as much as I try to avoid 'anonymous prophecies', that is almost difficult to do when the various Rhineland prophecies are concerned. However, they all seem to agree on the important points:

The prophecy: "When the time is near, people will not know how to dress. Women will wear hats like men, and pants like men. Then will follow a tragic and unlucky time like our Creator has spoken of before us. People will fear themselves on earth, and fear things that are to come.

"Father will be against son, and son against father. Dogma will be perverted; men will try to overthrow the Catholic church! Mankind will become lovers of pleasure. The true and believing will not be found any more, after which the independent peoples will fight wars against each other for a long time. Thrones will have collapsed, and kingdoms will collapse. And through this process, the unaffected East against the West will resort to heavy weapons. Then it is no longer over fatherland, language or belief. A war will follow after a winter which really was no winter, when there will be a soulless snow that will fall. The flowers will bloom very early in this year, and the cows will be up to their knees in grass by April. The first soldiers that come will wear cherry blossoms on their helmets. The rye will be brought in before the battle but the wheat won’t. The soldiers are animals and will eat the wheat in the fields.

"On the east field by Gravenstein, the soldiers will kill a red cow. However, they won’t have much time to eat from it.

"The citizens flee from the town. A young lass with a red skirt who is the last to cross the small creek will be shot. In the middle of Germany they will meet. Towns and villages will be destroyed. After, it will be necessary for the people to hide in the mountains and in the woods. In the nearby lower Germany, the battle will be decided. There will be battles like the world has never seen before. This terrible battle will begin by the Birch Forest near Bodberg. For three days they will fight; covered with wounds, they will fight until they stand in blood".

As noted earlier, this could have been based on the 'Monk of Werl's prophecy, which is below:

:::::::::::::::::::::
:::::::::::::::::::::

The 'Monk of Werl' (1701 Prophecy)

This Rhineland prophecy was published in 1701 Cologne in a book entitled “coelëstis anonymi redintegrationis tractatus de visionibus illustratis”, and was written by an anonymous monk who lived in Werl, a town located in the district of Soest in North Rhine-Westphalia. The town is famous for having in its possession a statue of the Virgin Mary that dates from the 12th century and is called the Consolatrix (Consolation of the Afflicted). The town has had this statue since 1661.

Apparently, the Monk's prophecy is his own which came from a vision, and, he had permission from his superior to write and published what he saw. The Monk of Werl's prophecy became famous after 1849 when it was republished by the same author who first published Rembold 'Spielbahn's' life and visions, Wilhem Schrattenholz.

(Version by Schrattenholz:) “After these days, an unfortunate time will come, as our Ers (?) says more fiercely, that people on earth will be afraid of impending misfortune that will come. The father against the son, the brother against brother. Faithfulness and faith will no longer be found. After individual peoples are brought together, thrones threw together and almost destroyed, (i.e civil revolts), the whole of the south will arm against the north. Then they will no longer ask about Heimath and Glaubén, they will combine to murder and fight for the sovereignty of the world. (i.e. a world war). One will meet in the heart of Germany: cities and villages will be turned into heaps of rubble, so that the inhabitants are forced to flee to the mountains and forests; but in the lower part of the country the terrible struggle will be decided. There armies will camp there the like of which has never before been seen in the world. The greatest battle of Birkenheim and Budbach will begin. Woe to my poor fatherland! You will fight for three days, the wounded will be torn apart: until they will be wading over the grandchildren in the bloody mire, finally the bearded peoples of the north will take the victory. The enemies flee, but will desperately resist the river. (the Rhine?). The inhabitants of the places will cry, but God will comfort them and they will say: The Lord has done this.”

In the same year, 1849, Thomas (Theodore) Beykirch also published the Monk of Werl's prophecy in his book 'Prophetstimmen', which helped spread its popularity. However, according to a priest named Fr. Winfried Ellerhorst who wrote 'Prophecies about the fate of Europe. Visions of famous seers from twelve centuries, Munich (1951), Beykirch said the monk was a Franciscan.

While Beykirch says the monk was a Franciscan, another German source I found says he was a Capuchin, which makes more sense as the town of Werl had a Capuchin presence for nearly two centuries from 1645 to 1836, that is before the Franciscans became the custodians of the pilgrim Church of the Visitation in 1849 until 2019. Since Beykirch's book was published in 1849 when the Franciscans arrived in Werl, he may have mistaken the Monk's order to be Franciscan instead of Capuchin.

Here is a more detailed version of the prophecy as printed by Beykirch and reprinted by Ellerhorst in his 1959 book:

(Beykirch /Ellerhorst): 'There will be a terrible war. On the one hand will be all the peoples of the West, on the other all of the East. They will come in terrible crowds. You will struggle for a long time with undecided luck, until you finally come to the area of the Rhine. There you will fight for three days, so that the water of the Rhine will be coloured red, until soon afterwards there will be a battle on the birch tree. There will be white, blue and gray soldiers fighting with such power and anger that those gangs will be completely wiped out, and then there will be peace and quiet. But that time will come when there will be dissatisfaction with religion everywhere. If no one obeys, no longer wants to be subject, if you can no longer differentiate between rich and poor, then believe that that time is near.' (i.e. differences can hardly be seen between the different social classes?)

'In those days the father will be against the son and the son against the father. Loyalty and faith will no longer be found. The individual peoples will fight for a long time. Thrones will collapse, empires will overturn. Suddenly the south will take up arms against the north. It will not be a matter of fatherland and faith; one will unite to kill, to fight because of the sovereignty of the world.

They will meet in the middle of Germany after the residents are forced to flee to the mountains and forests. This terrible battle will be decided in the regions of Low Germany. There the armies will camp like never before in the world. This terrible meeting will begin at the birch grove, near Bodberg. Woe, poor fatherland! They will fight there for three days; covered with wounds, they will still mangle each other and wade to the ankles in the blood. The bearded peoples of the seven-star will win, but their enemies will face up again and fight with extreme despair. There that power is destroyed, its strength broken, so that few remain to announce the outrageous news. '

Ellerhorst says Beykirch found his source from this text: “Prophetia de terribili luctu Austri et Aquilonis et proelio ponendo in Finibus ducatus Westphaliae prope Bodbergum. Ex libro cui Titulus erat: Coeleslis redintegrationis tractatus de visionibus illustrati. Cum permissione officialatus Werlensis. Coloniae. 1801.” (NOTE: The earliest sources I have found say 1701, not 1801, so, this could be a typo.)

The Anonymous Prophecy of Mayence – dated 1854 - HOAX that Circulated in WWI

There is a prophecy described as the 'Prophecy of Mayence', again it's anonymous, however it also foretells that the decisive battle will happen in Germany in the Birch Tree Country.

HOWEVER: I JUST DISCOVERED THIS IS A HOAX DATING FROM WWI.

(NOTE: Considering the prophecy is given the French name 'Mayence' not the German 'Mainz', the hoax must have been started by a French author. The Birch Tree prophecies had also filtered over to France, so someone there obviously got the bright idea to try and pin it to WWI and spread it around as such.)

Peter Schlinkert (b.1730 - 1800)

Peter Schlinkert was a rope maker from Meschede in the Duchy of Westphalia. (One source I found says he is was a tailor.) While in military service during the Seven Year's War (1756-1763), he made a prediction in which he saw a carriage shot through and warned his sovereign Duke Clemens of Westphalia to be careful and take a different transport and told him what he saw. Schlinkert was arrested since to prophecy an assassination attempt or death of a ruler was against the law, however, the Duke listened to the prophecy and took a different carriage. As predicted, the original carriage he was about to take indeed had a shot fired through it an hour later, no one was injured. The Duke released Schlinkert from custody, granted his request to leave military service and also gave him a life pension of 25 thalers a year.

He also saw a strange sight that didn't make any sense to him. One night he heard a cry on the Haarweg road: a vision appeared before his eyes, that of cogs blocking the road, and a crowd trying to repair a broken wagon, then, he saw flames burning buildings in the village of Mamel. The vision didn't make any sense – until two years after his death two estates were destroyed by the fire in Mamel. The blaze was devastating because on the way to the scene the fire engine was involved in an accident with a wagon to where the axle of the wagon was caught up in it and delayed help from arriving on time. The accident happened on the Haarweg road.

Schlinkert's 'Birch Tree Prophecy':

"At the birch tree, the armies of the West will fight in a terrible battle against the armies of the East, and after many bloody sacrifices the West will be victorious. Eastern soldiers will retreat to the Haar, and when the villagers see the Werler and the Haar on fire, they will have to flee quickly to the forest of Armsberger. Another battle will be fought near the Ruhr bridge, but there will be only with artillery. A few days later, the last great battle on German soil took place.
The armies of the East will be completely wiped out and only a few will escape to return home with news of the defeat. There will be terrible lamentations.

After these days of misery and misery, happiness and peace will return to Germany, even if, in the first year, women will have to walk behind the plow.”

Prophecy of Wessel Dietrich Eilert, also known as “Old Jasper” (1764-1833)

Another 'folk prophet', Wessel Dietrich Eiler was was born on July 2, 1764 and died on August 10, 1833 in Bavarian Germany. He was a Westphalian farmer known for his prophecies and was also called “Old Jasper” or Jasper of Deininghausen and lived in Huckarde near Dortmund, Germany. He made several predictions that came true, such as the Prussian Royal house gaining the Germany crown again. At the beginning of 1813, he announced that the French would leave Germany in 6 months. Then in October came the popular revolution from Leipzig. In 1830 he also predicted the construction of the the railway through the Bodelschwingh forest going from east to west in that a road would be built on which cars would travel without the need of horses and cause a terrible din. The Cologne-Mindener railway line was built in 1845-1847.

His Birch Tree prophecy was printed in 1848. While it is claimed this is nothing more than a bunch of older prophecies Birch Tree prophecies cobbled together and attributed to Jasper, since I cannot find proof of a forgery either, I'll include them, but again, read with discernment:

“In the year when the war begins, we will have already brought in the corn, but not the wheat.
Before this war, there will be a time of general disloyalty. Men will have a hard time with good and honour, their politeness will be deceiving ... There will be a general collapse of the fibre of society.

In the evening, we will say: "Peace, peace". But there is no peace, and in the morning, the enemies will already be outside the doors and will ring out the din of war. But it won't last long, and those who want to be safe will only have to find a good hiding place for a few days. sides, the flight will be very fast ... This war will break out from the East. I'm scared of the east.

[At the beginning] Our soldiers will go to the borders, and soon after they will return calmly.

But hardly will they be at home when the enemy will be there, with force, as if they had grown like mushrooms on the ground. An important battle will take place at the birch tree between Unna, Hamm and Werl. There, half of the nations of the whole world will compete.

God will scare the two enemy camps with all His might.
Only a few Russians will come home to talk about their defeat ... We will have to throw wagons and wheels in the water, otherwise the enemies will take everything with them in their flight.

The battle, the victory, and the flight will follow each other so quickly one after the other, that the one who can hide that for a short period of time will have escaped the danger.
In Cologne the last battle will take place.

The earth will lose so much of its population that women will have to work in all fields, and seven girls will fight for a man. The priesthood will be so rare that one will have to walk seven hours to hear Mass.

First the Poles will not have fought and will be invaded, but then they will fight against their invaders and they will receive a king. France will be divided in three days. Spain will not be involved, but the Spanish will occupy areas to help restore order with churches. Austria will be spared rather. The papal seat will be kept empty for a while ... (NOTE: like other prophecies point out, the Papal seat will literally be empty during the wars, this is not a prophecy of Sedevacantism.)

It will not really be a religious war, however, but all who believe in Jesus Christ will make common cause.

The main sign of the era in which war will break out is general indifference to matters of (Christian) religion and the general corruption of morals in many places. At that time, they will give the name of fools to the believers, and the infidels will pretend to be men of light.

It will be religion that will unite us all, (i.e. the Christian Faith), except for the Jews who will show their old stubbornness. On the Rhine will be a church which will be built by the will of all peoples.
From there, where the next great war will break out, is what the people are supposed to believe. All confessions will be compatible. (NOTE: this means after the wars when we are ll part of the One Catholic Faith we are 'supposed to believe', the end of schisms and heresies, this is not a prophecy of a One World Religion here.)

Germany will receive a new king, then will follow a happy time.”
