!? Leo 'The Philosopher' (865-911 AD)

STATUS: NOT A CREDIBLE GREAT MONARCH PROPHECY

In Fr. Gerald Culleton's book 'The Prophets and Our Times' there is a short prophecy included from Leo 'The Philosopher', but it is not a credible prophecy and therefore requires debunking as a Great Monarch prophecy.

The Leo referenced is Emperor Leo VI of Constantinople. He received the titles 'Leo the Philosopher' and 'Leo the Wise' but it is a wonder he received these titles at all, for his 'prophetic knowledge' and prophecies came from his practise of divination and astrology, and not from any mystic gift from God. He was of superstitious mind, and, his life was also a scandal to the Eastern Greek Church due to his multiple marriages, therefore he is obviously not anyone who is credible regarding prophecies.

In any case the prophecy attributed to him does not actually reference the Great Monarch, and, shows signs of 12th century manipulation, which would render it suspect as a reference. The prophecies attributed to Leo VI were made popular in Europe in the 12th century manuscript 'Oracles of Leo the Wise', and there is evidence elements were added in the 12th century:

“There will arise an imperial deliverer — an oriental Frederick — who will save the kingdom and the people. He will come from the Mohammedans over whom he will rule — adorned with all virtue — poor but needing nothing — two angels in the form of eunuchs will accompany him — mankind will accept him as their ruler. He will conquer the Arabs — no taxes after twelve years. Immediately after, there will set in a period of darkness, crime and revolution."

The suspicious elements are:

1) The mention the 'imperial deliverer' will be 'an oriental Frederick'. This is a reference to the western Holy Roman Emperor Frederick I (1122-1190): Leo VI would not have been alive to know hie name, but it certainly would be a descriptive element that would have been added to a text dating from the 12th century for a scholar who wanted to make comparisons are add explanatory details for a reader of his time.

  1. The 'deliverer' will 'come from the Mohammedans' – meaning he will come from the Middle East countries, or actually be a Muslim – a red flag a we know from the credible prophecies the Great Monarch will be French.

  1. Leo's oracles were prophecies that concerned the future of his eastern kingdom, and since this features an 'eastern ruler' that will deliver the east, this is not a Great Monarch prophecy, but obviously a prediction pertaining to only the eastern realm.

The Great Monarch will be ruler of far more than the east, and will certainly not come from the Middle East or 'come from the Mohammedans'.

So, considering Leo practised divination and astrology and was not a true mystic, and, this prophecy shows 12th century editing, this prophecy is not included in the Timeline.
