(Bl.) Bernard de Bustis (c.1450 -1513)

(BL.) BERNARD DE BUSTIS (c.1450 -1513)

Also known or spelled as, Bernardino de Bustis, Bernardino de Busto and in Latin, Bernardinus de Bustis.

He was the son of a Milanese jurist and, after completing his studies in his hometown he moved to Pavia where he could take law courses at the town university and then graduate in law.

In 1475 or 1476 he entered the order of the Friars Minor of the Lombard vicariate, receiving the habit in the convent of Sant'Angelo di Legnano under the guidance of friar Michele Carcano.

A celebrated Franciscan theologian and preacher, he was a fervent supporter of the doctrine and devotion to the Holy Name of Jesus, devotion to Mary, and devotion to St. Joseph. He was also a fruitful writer of numerous dogmatic, moral and ascetic-mystical works.

His most famous theological works are his writings on Mary. Bustis presented and defended the Immaculate Conception, the holy activity of Mary as Mediatrix, and also her role in the work of redemption as Coredemptrix and the dispenser of God's graces.

He was also the author of the "Defensorium" where the moralist and defender of the "Monti di Pietà" is revealed, one of the most daring social works of the time.

He died in S. Maria di Melegnano near Milan, on 8 May 1513.

Although his cult has not yet received the official status of the Catholic Church, he has been venerated since his death as blessed and remembered in the Franciscan martyrology on May 8.

In Part 2, Sermon XI of his voluminous book of sermons, Rosarium Sermonum (Venezia, Giorgio Arrivabene, 1498), he wrote of the times preceding the Antichrist and also the appearance of the Antichrist.

In this sermon, there is mention of a Great Monarch to come, however, it is difficult to tell if he was actually being prophetic, or if this was just his commentary on past prophecies.

Even so, from what I can read from the original Latin text of his sermons, this loose translation / commentary of the prophecy that is already out on the Internet is very close:

::::::::::::

(NOTE: the is not a word for word translation, but this is the basic commentary / prophecy):

There will be an antipope appointed by a powerful (evil) king of Christianity, who will be followed at the beginning by the majority of believers. There will be schisms created by the election of this anti-pope. The church will suffer great tribulations as the majority follow the anti-pope and persecute those who will follow the true pope called “Roboam” (symbolic name taken from the Bible not his real name). Those who follow the true 'Angelic Pope' will be persecuted.

A truly Christian king will conquer this king, after much pain, trials and sufferings with the help of the Mary, the Immaculate Virgin.

The antipope will end badly.

The true Pope will crown the good King as Emperor this King; together they will reform the Church. At the same time, twelve cardinals will become pillars of the Church, they will be called to preach and will give an example to all men of how to live a holy life.
The Anti-Christ will later be born under the reign of this King-Emperor.  (i.e. The Antichrist will be born during the Age of Peace. This indicates his evil reign will occur after that of the Great Monarch.)

"At the time when Anti-Christ is about twenty years old, most of the world will have lost the faith."

(NOTE: This would indicate the Age of Peace according to Bustis' calculation will last about 20 years, maybe a little longer past 20, if there is a lapse of time between the Great Monarch's coronation and the Antichrist's birth.)
