Adso of Montier-en-Der (c. 910 / 915 - 992 AD)

ADSO of MONTIER-EN-DER (c. 910 / 915 - 992 AD)  Born of a noble family, Adso was an oblate at the monastery of Luxeuil, where he also received his education. He was later called to teach at the monastery of St. Èvre in Toul, and in 935 he entered the Benedictine monastery at Montier-en-Der. In 968, when he became abbot of Montier-en-Der, he began to introduce reforms there in the tradition of the monastery at Gorze. Adso had contacts with the leading religious and political figures of his day, notably Gerberga, the wife of Louis IV of France and sister of Otto I of Germany; Gerbert of Aurillac (the future Pope Sylvester II); and Abbo of Fleury, who asked Adso to compile a verse edition of the second book of the Dialogues, a hagiographic and doctrinal text composed by Pope Gregory I. Along with his verse edition of the Dialogues, which is now lost, he wrote other works in verse and several poems and hymns. He was also the author of a number of saints’ lives. His hagiographic works in particular reveal his devotion to the religious reform current in his day. In 990 Adso became the abbot of the monastery of St. Bénigne in Dijon. His death two years later occurred while he was on pilgrimage to the Holy Land.

Adso’s most important text was the Epistola ad Gerbergam reginam de ortu et tempore Antichristi (“Letter to Queen Gerberga on the Place and Time of Antichrist”), also known as the Libellus de Antichristi (“Little Book on the Antichrist”). This book became the standard text on the topic of the Antichrst from the mid 10th to the 13 century.

Adso affirmed the Antichrist will not come until after the reign of the King of France and his Roman Empire comes to an end, thereby confirming the general agreement among the past saints and doctors of the Church that there would be a Great Monarch before then, a ruler of France who will reign over the Roman Christian Empire:

::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

"… the Empire of the Romans began, which was the strongest of all earlier kingdoms and had all earthly kingdoms under its dominion, and all nations of peoples lived under the Romans and paid tribute to them. Therefore, the Apostle Paul says that Antichrist will not come into the world unless the apostasy comes first, that is, unless first all the kingdoms which long ago were subject to the Roman Empire secede from it. This time, however, is not yet come, because, even though we see that the Empire of the Romans is for the most part destroyed, nevertheless, as long as the kings of the Franks, who possess the Roman Empire by right, survive, the dignity of the Roman Empire will not perish altogether, because it will endure in the French kings.

Some of our teachers say that a King of the Franks (France) will possess the entire Roman Empire. This King will be the greatest and last of all monarchs, and after having prosperously governed his kingdom he will come in the end to Jerusalem and he will lay down his sceptre and his crown upon the Mount of Olives. This will be the end and consummation of the Empire of Rome and immediately afterwards Antichrist will come…”

Prophecy of the Antichrist – the Second Coming Happenes AFTER his Evil Reign (Source 'The Antichrist' by Yyves Dupont):

"Antichrist will be born of Jewish parents, of the tribe of Dan, but his mother will not be a virgin, as many believe. As the Holy Ghost came into the heart of Mary, so will the devil enter into the mother of Antichrist, and his diabolical power will always support him. Babylon will be his birthplace, but he will be reared and instructed in Bethsaida and Corozain. After his education at the hands of malignant spirits he will go to Jerusalem and place his seat in the Temple which he will have restored. He will submit to the rite of circumcision, claiming that he is the Son of the Omnipotent God. His first converts will be kings and princes. His influence will extend from sea to sea, largely through force and persuasive eloquence. He will perform many signs and great miracles. Those who believe in him will be marked on the forehead with a sign. For three and a half years he will hold sway and, at the end of that period, he will put to death Henoch and Elias, who will have previously opposed him by preaching the true faith. Shortly afterwards, Christ will appear, (Second Coming) and Antichrist will be killed by Michael the Archangel."
