BL. ANNA MARIA TAIGI
(1769-1837) was born in Siena on May 29,
1769 and baptized the following day. Because of financial
difficulties, her parents, Louis Giannetti and Mary Masi, moved to
Rome when Anna Maria was six years old. In the Eternal City, Anna
Maria attended the school conducted by the Filippini Sisters for two
years. Following her schooling, she worked at various occupations,
even that of a maid, to bring financial assistance to her parents.
When still a young girl, she married Dominic Taigi,
a pious young man but of difficult and rather coarse character.
Disregarding these defects, Anna Maria was more concerned with his
virtue, and for the forty-nine years of their married life she
conducted herself with the greatest affability and delicacy, finding
ample opportunity to exercise continually the virtues of patience and
charity.
Their marriage was characterized by the highest
Christian principles. Understanding the profound social and moral
values of the Christian marriage and considering it, above all, as
one of the highest missions from Heaven, Bl. Anna Taigi
transformed her home into a real sanctuary in which God had the first
place. Docile to her husband in every way, she avoided anything which
might irritate him and thus disturb the family peace. Serious and
hardworking, she saw to it that nothing was lacking to her family
and, in so far as one in her impoverished circumstances could, she
was generous to the poor. She bore seven children, three of whom died
in childhood. Two boys and two girls grew to maturity and she
provided them with the most accurate and complete religious and
secular education.
Having sought to correspond to grace from her
childhood, she now began to live a life of intense spirituality. She
had one desire only: to love God and to serve Him in everything; she
had only one preoccupation: to avoid the least shadow of the
slightest voluntary imperfection. She was greatly devoted to the Holy
Eucharist, to the Most Holy Trinity, to the Infant Jesus, to the
Sacred Passion of Our Lord, and ever had the most tender devotion to
Our Lady.
Bl. Anna Maria Taigi is one of the great mystics. Yet, she achieved her sanctification by living the
ordinary life of wife and mother in a spirit of Christian mission and
compliance with God's will. Her daily attendance at Mass, her total
surrender to God, her readiness to help anyone in need, and her being
an active member of the Third Order of the Most Holy Trinity were, at
the same time, the sources and the fruits of her intense spiritual
life. She had a very close friend, Bl. Elizabeth Canori-Mora, who
also was a wife and mother. They helped and supported each other in
their marriages and difficulties and grew together in holiness and
sanctity in their married vocation.
Bl. Anna Maria entered the
Third Order of the Most Holy Trinity on December 26, 1808. God
enriched her with many supernatural gifts. The most unusual of these
was the apparition of a luminous globe like a miniature sun, which
shone before her eyes at all times and in which, for forty-seven
years, she could see present and future events anywhere in the world
as well as the state of grace of individuals, living or dead. In it
she could foresee the revolutions, the wars, the designs of
governments, the aims of secret societies, superstitions, and crimes,
the reward of the saints, and the punishments, both temporal and
eternal, prepared by God for all human transgressions.
Bl. Anna Maria Taigi died June 9, 1837. The Church
declared her "Blessed" in 1920. Her incourrupt mortal remains lie in
the Chapel of the Madonna in the Basilica of San Crisogono in Rome,
Italy. The Trinitarians are actively promoting the cause of her
canonization.
At times, the visions shown to her in the mystic sun
were so terrifying that she didn't want to look she admitted and
often kept her eyes turned away when possible. Among the visions
were revelations concerning the Civil War of France, the Angelic
Pontiff, and the chastisements that will strike the earth, which
include the Three Days of Darkness. As she didn't write her visions
down, they were collected by her visitors, and in particular, her spiritual director, Mon. Raffaele Natali, to whom she was under obedience to reveal everything, and, who first revealed this great chastisement prophecy during her beatification process, which opened in 1863. Here are a few of her revelations that have been passed down.
::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
The Great Chastisement of wars and destruction as revealed by Mon. Natali during Bl Taigi's Beatification Process:
"Things will be so convulsed that man would no
longer be able to put things in order, but the omnipotent Arm of the
Lord will remedy everything. She told me that the great scourge of the
earth had been mitigated, but not that of Heaven, for it would be
horrible, shocking and universal." Truly, the universal nature of the
coming chastisement makes it a "Judgment of Nations."
That great Chastisement would occur long after the holy people of her
epoch had been buried, he continued. "It will arrive unexpectedly and in
it the wicked will be destroyed. I saw the earth enveloped in flames,
many buildings crumbling, the earth and Heaven seemed to be in agony.
"Many millions of men will die by steel, some in wars, others in
conflicts, and millions more by unforeseen death, and this throughout
the whole world. As a result, entire nations will return to the unity
of the Catholic Church, many Turks, Gentiles and Hebrews will be
converted in a way that will surprise Catholics, who will be amazed by
the fervor and observance they will show in their lives.
"In short, she told me that the Lord wanted to purge the world and His
Church, and for that He had prepared a new crop of souls who, unknown,
would appear to perform great works and surprising miracles. She told me
that after the Lord had cleansed the earth with wars, revolutions and
other calamities, Heaven would begin [its chastisement].
"For, at the end of this scourge, there would be a general convulsion of
shocking meteorological phenomena with many deaths. The Servant of God
told me several times that the Lord showed her in the mysterious sun the
universal triumph of the renewed Church, by a manner so great and
surprising that she could not describe it. ”

The Mention of a specific 'Three Days'
There is no question Bl Anna Maria Taigi saw in her mystic sun several visions of "clouds of darkness" and other horrific disaters descending upon the earth during the times of the punishments, this has been mentioned during her beatification process as seen above. However, the mention of a specific time-frame of Three Days for the foretold 'purge' of the earth was first allegedly revealed by her spiritual director, D. Raffaele Natali, who was not only her strongest supporter during her beatification process, but also gave ample testimony regarding her visions, for in obedience, she had told him everything.
According to an article in the "El Ermitaño, (Nº 155, Oct. 26, 1871), D. Natali revealed the following during c. August of 1864, a year after her beatification process was opened by Bl Pius IX in 1863:
“It is very true that the venerable Servant of God announced the scourge of the three days of darkness spread over all the earth...
In these circumstances, the windows should be closed, and leaning over them should be avoided, and it will be imperative to pray the holy Rosary and pray."
Of interest, the author Edward Thomas Healy, who wrote the 'Religious Library" says in Volume V of this work (published in London in 1873), which is about Bl Anna Maria Taigi, claims that he personally knew a parish priest that was stationed in the church of San Marcello and who was present when D. Raffaele Natali came to verify the correct date for Bl. Anna's marriage from the parish register as it was incorrectly stated in a biography of her life by Mgr. Luquet. The priest allegedly confirmed to Mr. Healy that Fr. Natali also told him of the Three Days of Darkness as revealed to him by Bl. Anna, that it was a true prophecy, and that this encounter with Fr. Natali happened in 1863, which would be around the same time Fr. Natali first allegedly publicly revealed this information, aka, the opening of her beatification process.
The priest confirmed to Mr. Healy it would be a time of Three Days of physical darkness when no light would shine except for the blessed candles. She did not give him any dates when this would happen, but said to him that:
"It will come to pass when every human hope concerning the persecuted Church will have vanished." (Healy, "Religious Library", Vol. V 1873, p. 315)
So, while it is true Bl Anna did not publicly reveal the specific number 'three' to anyone, in fact, it is known she often turned away from her mystic sun as she didn't want to see the horrors shown to her, we only have it from second-hand accounts attributed to Fr. Natali who we know under obedience was oblige to tell him everything she saw, but, can they be discredited for this? Some of the most famous revelations were not written by the mystics themselves but revealed second-hand by others, as in the case with Bl Catherine Emmerick, and, Marie-Julie Jahenny.
Considering there are several other corresponding revelations of the Three Days of Darkness and a rain of supernatural fire made by other saints, and other credible mystics, there is obviously a very credible element of truth to this.
In fact, one of her known visions dated March 21, 1812 and which is mentioned in the beatification process, is described as follows:
"The holy woman prayed for the Church and for the whole world. She saw suddenly a globe similar to the earth in the air, completely surrounded by flames which threatened to consume it. On one side was Jesus crucified, shedding a torrent of Blood;
at His feet was the Blessed Virgin who, having laid down her Queen's mantle, urged the Divine Savior to stop, by the merits of His Blood offered for sinners, the plagues with which men were threatened; Anna-Maria united in this prayer and the vision disappeared." (Beatification Procès, fol. 807. Summ. N. XVII, § 15 et 145. In, "Vie de la vénérable Anna-Maria Taïgi", by Calixte de la
Providence , Paris, 1878,
pp. 404-405)
Also, the following prophecy was made c. 1863 in a book called "profezie privata" (Roma, 1863) (Private Prophecy), which, seems to support the accounts that Mon. Natali revealed c. 1863 the number would of the horrific darkness would be of three day's duration:
“After the three days of darkness, Saints
Peter and Paul, having come down from Heaven, will preach throughout the
world and designate a new Pope. A great light will flash from their
bodies and will settle upon the future Pontiff. ... There shall be
innumerable conversions of heretics, who will return to the bosom of the
Church; all will note the edifying conduct of their lives, as well as
that of all other Catholics. Russia, England and China will come to the
Church." (Source: Anna Maria Taigi, Private Prophecies, Rome, 1863; Fr. Sánchez, The Last Times, p. 47-48.)

Excerpts from the
“Christian Trumpet” (1878)
Revelation of the
Civil War of France – a Universal Revolution Follows –
Persecution of the Church – Massacres – a Pope will Flee Rome
France, she said, shall
fall into frightful anarchy. The French people shall have a
desperate civil war, in which old men themselves shall take up arms.
The political parties having exhausted their blood and their rage
without being able to arrive at any satisfactory understanding, they
shall at the last extremity, agree by common consent to have recourse
to the Holy See.
Then the Pope shall send
to France a special legate, in order that he may examine the state of
affairs and the dispositions of the people. In consequence of the
information received, his Holiness himself shall nominate a most
Christian king for the government of France.
(NOTE: this is one odd
deviation from other Great Monarch prophecies in which it is shown
the king arrives first and saves the Pope, even Marie-Julie Jahenny
saw that the Great King will save the Pope during or after the
devastation of Rome, while Bl Anna Taigi sees it will happen the
other way around, possibly, Bl Anna Taigi saw one of the usurpers to
the French throne? He may be a Christian king, but Bl. Anna Taigi
says the pope will 'nominate' a king, and her revelations didn't say
he would see him crowned. On the other hand, Marie-Julie Jahenny
saw several usurpers will attempt to take the French throne, and this
will be during the revolutions. The Great King will come in the
midst of all this, quell the revolutions, take back the throne and
save the Pope. We shall have to wait and see how this unfolds.)
During this time there
shall be a great universal revolution.
The priests shall almost
everywhere be massacred to such an extent that, in order to find one
of them alive, it shall be necessary to travel several days. The
churches shall be closed, but only for a short time.
(In another copy more
recently received from Rome this passage varies somewhat. It is in
the following words :
“Religious shall be
persecuted, priests shall be massacred, the churches shall be closed,
but only for a short time; the Holy Father shall be obliged to
abandon Rome.”
On the Three Days of
Darkness
A very thick darkness
shall envelop the earth during three days. This awful darkness shall
be impregnated with such pestilential vapours, and filled with such
frightful apparitions, that they will cause, in a more special
manner, the death of the hypocritical or avowed enemies of the Holy
Church.
Anna Maria announced that
on this terrible occasion so many of these wicked men, enemies of his
Church and of their God, shall be killed by this divine scourge, that
their corpses round Rome will be as numerous as the fish which a
(then) recent inundation of the Tiber had carried into the city. All
the enemies of the Church, secret as well as known, will perish over
the whole earth during that universal darkness, with the exception of
some few, whom God will soon after convert. The air shall be infected
by demons, who will appear under all sorts of hideous forms.
On this subject, Anna
Maria has given several directions to the faithful. One of these was,
to procure blessed candles, which alone shall give light during the
darkness: also, to remain in prayer, to recite the holy rosary, not
to attempt to look out for idle and vain curiosity. (i.e or they will
fall down dead on the spot).
A heavenly apparition
shall come to reassure the faithful. St. Peter and St. Paul will
appear on the clouds, and all men shall see them; and, in a super
natural manner, faith shall return to their hearts. Innumerable
conversions of heretics shall cause universal edification.
Another Revelation to
Bl. Anna Taigi:
“One day,” says the
Cardinal Pedicini, “Anna Maria, while shedding a torrent of tears,
prayed and offered her actions and sufferings for the conversion of
sinners, for the destruction of sin, and that God might be known and
loved by all men. Then God manifested to her the horrible sins of
persons of every condition, and how grievously he was offended. At
this sight the servant of God
experienced a profound
sorrow, and sighing, she exclaimed:
“Dearly beloved ! what
is the remedy for this disaster?”
Jesus Christ answered:
“My child, the Church, My spouse, My Father, and Myself shall
remedy everything. For after a punishment .... those who shall
survive shall have to conduct themselves well.”
At this point she saw
innumerable conversions of heretics, who will return to the bosom of
the Church; she saw, also, the edifying conduct of their lives, as
well as that of all other Catholics.”
Another Vision:
Quote from the 'Christian Trumpet': “During several
successive days, Anna Maria beheld a most excessive darkness
spreading itself over the whole world . She likewise saw falling
ruins of walls, accompanied by much dust, as if a great edifice had
tumbled down. This scourge was shown to her on divers occasions. This
may indicate the ruins caused by frightful earthquakes, or the
destruction effected by the wicked Communists. We presume, and assume
as pretty certain, that this darkness will be sensible, similar to
that of Egypt, mentioned in Exodus, tenth chapter, and that it shall
continue during three days. Though the venerable servant of God has
not mentioned this duration, yet Monseigneur Natali, having been
questioned on this particular point by a large number of persons, has
invariably assured them that the darkness shall last during three
days.” (NOTE: Mon. Natali was very close with Bl. Anna Taigi for
many years and enjoyed her full confidence regarding her
revelations.)

The Pestilence and
Three Days of Darkness – The Angelic Pontiff will be selected
AFTER
"God will ordain two
punishments; One, in the form of wars, revolutions and other evils,
will originate on earth; the other will be sent from Heaven. There
shall come over all the earth an intense darkness lasting three days
and three nights. Nothing will be visible and the air will be laden
with pestilence, which will claim principally but not exclusively the
enemies of religion. During this darkness artificial light will be
impossible. Only blessed candles can be lighted and will afford
illumination. He who out of curiosity opens his window to look out
or leaves his house will fall dead on the spot. During these three
days the people should remain in their homes, pray the Rosary and beg
God for mercy.

join the Church shortly before the reign of Anti-Christ. These
conversions will be amazing. Those who shall survive shall have to
conduct themselves well. There shall be innumerable conversions of
heretics, who will return to the bosom of the Church; all will note
the edifying conduct of their lives, as well as that of all other
Catholics.
Russia, England, and
China will come into the Church.

The following prophecies
were published by the “Future Destinies of States and Nations”
(Turin, 1864). According to that publication, as Bl. Anna Taigi did
not write down her revelations and visions they were collected by
others.
This series of
prophecies was supposedly revealed by Bl Anna Taigi to a priest of
Rome named Don Pallotti, who in 1847 sent it to Turin to Fr.
Fulgenzio da Carmagnola, Cappuchin ex-provincial, resident in the
convent of the Madonna di Campagna. Fr. Fulgenzio asked Fr.
Pallotti if the person who they referred to was already existing in
the Sacred Collaege of Cardinals, the answer was no, but that he was
alive and that he was a simple priest. Don Pallotti did reveal the
he was of the Roman State at the time, he was not in Italy, but in
very distant parts of the world. Don Pallotti apparently did not say
any more, but it is believed he was referring to Bl. Pius IX who was
a simple priest at the time acting as an apostolic missionary in
Chile.
However, the author /
publisher of “Future Destinies” notes these prophecies referring
to great conversions and a magnificent restoration of the Church
could not all refer to Pius IX, but look more like Angelic Pontiff
prophecies. The author notes that Don Pallotti could have mixed
prophecies of Pius IX up with those of the future Angelic Pontiff to
come, which is possible. Therefore, I'm presenting the list below as
possible Angelic Pontiff prophecies:
:::::::::
Prophecy of the
Angelic Pontiff?
He will be elected in an
extraordinary way.
He will be acclaimed by
the people.
His name, which will
spread throughout the world, will resound from the mouth of children.
In the beginning he will
have to suffer, since he will have to fight with oppositions that he
will find on all sides, so he will be isolated; but the omnipotent
arm of God will be with him and will make him victorious.
Will the reform of the
Church, that is of the clergy calling him to the exact observance.
The state will make the
reform and call the seculars to help in the affairs of government,
and thus less aggravated will be able to wait more deliberately for
the interests of the Church.
He will have
extraordinary lights from God, he will be armed with a great faith
and of an ardent zeal.
He himself will preach to
the people.
Many bad Christians will
return on the right path.
Many Gentiles will come
to the faith.
Many heretics will
convert, and the schismatic churches will return to the centre of
Catholic unity.
The Turk will come to pay
his respects, and the distant peoples to pay him homage.
At that time the sciences
will progress and make various discoveries.
In the collapse in which
the State will be placed, he will have extraordinary aid even from
abroad.
He will be a lover of the
poor and of the people, and at the same time strict in justice.
Will reform the customs
of the peoples so that children can carry gold and silver with
open hands, without being harassed by anyone.
He will have a long life
and enough time to order everything for the glory of God.
But since by himself he
cannot not do it all alone, the omnipotent arm of God will shake the
world.
He will have the gift of
miracles.
Woe to those who will
resist and oppose his orders; the hand of God will be on them even on
this earth!
The Lord will give him so
much strength, so much power, that he will impose subjection even to
the sovereigns. This is the one who will be the delight of the
nations, dear to God, who after having brought the triumph of the
Church on earth, and having gathered the palm of inexplicable
triumph, laden with merit, will be called by Lord to the crown of
eternal glory in heaven; he will become universal to all nations, and
leave an immortal name, and his memory will be carved in the hearts
of future (or forthcoming) generations.
:::::::::::::::::::::::::::
NOTE: the so-called 'Illumination of Conscience' prophecy - apparently, no proof she made this.
Bl Anna Maria Taigi is cited as having
made an 'Illumination of Conscience' prophecy in 1836 a year before her death, a 'miracle of
self illumination'. This is the quotation given:
"A
great purification will come upon the world preceded by an
“Illumination of Conscience” in which everyone will see themselves as
God sees them."
However,
the earliest book source I can find for this literal quote is 'The
Miracle of Illumination of All Conscienses' by Thomas W. Petrisko, and it was published in the year 2000. The author does not say where he found his quote. He quotes it as is, no source given.
I
cannot find one
early printed source from the mid 1800s or even early 1900s that has
credited her with this prophecy, in
Italian, French, Spanish or English. They mention her Days of
Darkness prophecies, but I have not found any early source that
mentions an 'illumination of conscience', which is strange as it is
considered a major chastisement that comes before the Three Days of
Darkness, a prediction she did make.
Academics know that if an
early text source is lacking certain details, but these details are
found a long time afterwards in later publications, it is a sign those latter
details may have be added embellishments.
In fact, I have not even
found the prophecy at all in later relatively credible books, such as
Fr. Culleton's 'The Prophets and Our Times', not even Yves Dupont's
book 'Catholic Prophecy'. Like Fr. Culleton, he too doesn't even
mention it at all, let alone attribute it to Bl Anna. The fact Fr.
Culleton and Yves Dupont didn't mention it in their books means the
prophecy is suspect in itself.
And, those who claim Bl
Taigi made this prophecy do not cite any early sources either. Many
do not cite a source at all, but apparently have accepted it and
quoted it as fact.
So, until someone cites an
early source that said Bl Anna made this prophecy, all I can conclude
is that it is very likely she never made the prophecy at all and it
has been attributed to her in these modern times to make it sound
credible, as with many fake prophecies that have been tacked onto to
St. Padre Pio's good name to make them sound real.
If anyone actually has an
early text that says Bl Anna Maria Taigi predicted this, i.e. texts
from the 1800s or early 1900s, please let me know.
